Silver Bay has had a string quartet in residence, as well as a pianist, during the summer months for the past 86 years. The musicians are professional string players and pianists from all over the country. They perform hour-long concerts on Sunday nights at 8pm, and at Vespers in the Chapel each evening at 7:15pm They play a wide variety of wonderful music. There are currently two string quartets, one for the first four weeks of the summer and one for the second four weeks.
“The String Quartet at Silver Bay has been an integral part of the Silver Bay Community for 85 years. It marks one of the enduring classical music traditions of the Adirondacks. Established in 1939 by Charles Herschleb, the Executive Secretary, the quartet was created to support the Association’s mission of fostering spiritual growth, artistic expression and community life. The quartet performs throughout the summer season providing music for daily evening vespers services in the historic Hughes Memorial Chapel as well as weekly concerts and recitals, and sometimes you’ll catch them on the Inn porch. These performances reflect Silver Bay’s commitment to nurturing mind, body, and spirit through meaningful cultural programs. Over the decades the quartet evolved its membership and repertoire but has remained deeply rooted in its role as both spiritual accompaniment and cultural enrichment. The tradition draws musicians from across the country and often includes collaboration from guest artists and visiting faculty. Different traditions of intergeneration of the quartet have included quartets from Temple University and collections of musicians from different educational institutions. Their presence enhances Silver Bay’s broader educational and artistic offerings and continues to be a beloved highlight for generations of returning guests and emps. The quartet’s legacy exemplifies Silver Bay’s longstanding values of excellence, tradition, and inspiration, making an integral thread in this historical site,” Peter Doliber, Former CEO of Silver Bay YMCA.
