The Buzz on Lake George

Hague wasn’t always as quiet as it is today. From 1901-1929, the town hosted annual inboard speedboat regattas, with wealthy gentlemen racers from around the lake thrilling the well-heeled crowds with their sleek, high-performance boats. Some of these boats also competed off of Lake George, and even internationally. In 1929, this lavish scene came to a quick end with the crash of the stock market.

Fast forward to the post-World War II years. The men had returned from the front, gas was no longer rationed, and the emerging middle class was discovering the joys of family vacations. A few local businessmen in Hague decided to capitalize on this new wave of tourism by bringing racing back to town. This time, the boats would be the small, very affordable stock utility outboards, which were becoming popular with the motorheads of the day.

Ginger will show vintage videos and photos that bring the races back to life. You’ll hear about the small group of local men who had a very big dream and made it happen – staging annual 90-mile marathons that attracted up to 150 boats from across the country. In addition to sharing stories from some of the racers, Ginger will also talk about Gingerly, her Dad’s iconic 1956 race boat that returned to Hague in 2022, was restored by a local craftsman, and is now back out on her home waters.

GINGER HENRY KUENZEL

Ginger has deep roots in Hague. Her great grandfather came to Hague in the 1860s and was a founding member of the Lake George Regatta Association. Ginger lived in Munich, Germany, from 1973-1994, working as a journalist, editor, and translator. After returning to Hague, she served on the Town Board and is currently on the Town Sewer Committee. Committed to preserving the rich history of Lake George and to protecting its pristine waters from modern-day threats, Ginger currently serves on the board of the Hague Historical Society and the Lake George Association, the oldest lake-protection organization in the U.S.

She is the author of Downtown: Hilarious Tales from a Fictional Adirondack Town and co-author of Lake George Reflections, a book about the islands of Lake George. She is also a contributing editor to Stewards of the Water, stories of past and present stewards of Lake George, and has just published The Buzz on Lake George: Speedboat Racing 1900-1964.
